“It’s my responsability too”
At a young age, my father passed on to me a profound appreciation for natural resources, especially water. As it was abundant and easily accessibility in the past, I often questioned his emphasis on the responsible use of water. It wasn’t until water levels began to decrease and scarcity became a reality, particularly during summers, that I understood and respected his foresight. This experience also opened my eyes to the harsh reality of global warming. My upbringing gave me a genuine passion for sustainability and embracing the best practices associated with it.
Ovako’s world leading position in commitment to environmental care in the steel industry gives me a sense of that fatherly foresight. They use several methods, such as use of a less carbon-intensive electric arc furnace, recycled scrap, fossil-free energy, and in-house green hydrogen production. Each effort contributes to a significant reduction in CO2 emissions. In fact, from 2022 Ovako has also utilized Carbon Credits of the highest standard to offset remaining CO2 emissions that occur, despite extensive efforts.
Ovako’s own targets are closely aligned with all 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Whether it is promoting gender equality, ensuring safety, providing quality education, or encouraging innovation, Ovako has a comprehensive action plan in place and continuously strives for improvement year after year.
The steel industry is going through transformation towards a decarbonized future and Ovako has consistently demonstrated and exemplified the most efficient approach to achieve it. I am proud to be a part of Ovako’s dedication to decarbonization, being involved in this sustainable journey is truly inspiring.
